Kit Harington
In the TV series “Game of Thrones” he is the tormented Jon Snow, soon he will become a gladiator.
What is he doing with is life outside acting? “The less you know, the better” he says.
But then he admits a thing that leaves him totally indifferent (stripping off), a couple of things that he loves (writing poems and eating) and three that he hates: the cold, snooty colleagues and his face in girls’ bedrooms.
Please, not the poster. (title)
Miso soup and sashimi. It’s the protein diet that Kit Harington must do because of the script. I ask if it’s a chore. Quite a lot, he answers. In fact, at the third place in the list of things for which he likes to spend money, after jackets and sunglasses, there are restaurants.
Another things that is a real chore for him is working in cold places.
In Iceland, for example, where he spent the most of the last three years on the Game of Throne set. In the TV series, a fantasy story with kings, dragons, magic, bloody battles, many studied murders and a lot of sex for the survivors, Harington is Jon Snow, the bastard son of Eddard Stark, Winterfell Lord that, to give an idea of the mortality rate in the show, was beheaded in the first season.
In the last spring he feezed in Toronto, Canada, where he starred in Pompeii by director Paul W.S. Anderson.
“The first time I’ve heard about it I thought ‘surely we’re going to shoot in Rome’ “.
That didn’t happen: more cold and the diet.
In Toronto, Kit Harington has already starred in another movie, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D. Even then he did not like so much the city. If he has to go somewhere cold, iceland is better, he says.
“Here the scenery is beautiful and local people are adorable, nice and effusive. And there is a lots of good music”. But maybe he doesn’t love Toronto because of Silent Hill. When I tell him that I haven’t seen the movie he replies: “It’s horrible. Don’t watch it.”
On the other hand, he is enthusiastic about Game of Thrones. It’s hard to believe the opposite: in few month’s the show has completely changed his life and it opened him doors that he didn’t even know existed.
He is also happy about Milo, his character in Pompeii and his first important role on the big screen: “I play a gladiator”, he says, “he wants revenge for his family, murdered by the Romans”.
Is that why you’re on a diet?
“Most of the time I’m half-naked, that’s why I have to be muscular and fit”.
I can already see the posters in girls’ bedrooms.
“I prefer don’t think about it. I find strange even the fact that people recognizes me on the street. I never thought of becoming an actor to be famous. Part of the earnings repays loss of anonymity. It makes sense but I’m not accustomed yet.”
Is it true that your ideal girl should take an hamburger instead of a salad at the restaurant?
“I don’t like women too rigorous with their bodies. I love to eat, I’m looking for someone who love that also. And she must be funny.”
You have started in the theater. Even then were you dreaming to be on television and cinema?
“I grew up watching theatrical performances. My parents took me there. Most of the boys in London who want to become actors begin with small performances in small theaters, dreaming that one day they’ll have an important role in one of the most important theater of the city. My debut as a leading actor has been at the National Theatre, it was my first audition, I have been very lucky”.
When you have auditioned for Game of Thrones, what did you know about it?
“Nothing. After I got the part I had no idea if would become that successful. And then, boom, it exploded. It’s strange: I am known for only one character. People call me Jon Snow”.
If you had not become an actor, what would you have done?
“Before I dreamed being an actor, I thought of becoming a journalist, a cameraman or a photographer”.
Is it true that you write poetry?
“Only for myself, I would never publish them. At the moment I’m trying to make a script, but not to make a movie. I think it’s good to have a personal project, besides your everyday job. I need a hobby, that’s why I also do photographs and portraits”.
Do you miss London?
“The more you become famous, the more you spend your time in a hotel room. I’m really attached to my family and my friends, I am very homesick.
I know that I must get used to it but there are times when I feel sad”.
What do you do when you’re sad?
“A lot of chats on Skype with my friends. I read or try to explore the place where I am. I would like to have a dog, but that wouldn’t be fair. He would have a bad life, always on the road.
You can’t defeat loneliness, all you can do is learn how live with it”.
Would you like to start a family, one day?
“I have bought an apartment in London that it cost me the most of the money I’ve earned until now, but at least I’ve a place to call my own, where I can go when I come back. One day, I hope to find a partner and have kids”.
What’s the best advice you ever received by your colleagues?
“Jason Momoa said to me: ‘Do not complain. It’s easy to feel stressed, but remember this is one of the best jobs in the world.’
I repeat this every day to myself”.
Does it mean that you are inclined to complain?
“I often have a pessimistic attitude. On the set, days are long. For Game of Thrones we are often filming in uncomfortable places. My character, Jon Snow, doesn’t have an easy life, this means having bad thoughts in your head for a long time”.
Jon Snow never smiles and you are kind of serious too. Is it because you’re too much into the character?
“No. I prefer to hide my happy side in public. Honestly I don’t understand this necessity to know actor’s private life. Every time I meet a fan I think that I’m spoiling him the pleasure of watching the show. Not to mention my parents: they can’t take seriously Jon Snow, because they know me”.
In the third season there is a scene where you are naked.
“I don’t have many problems to undress me, I accepted to do that in the contract and I knew that it would have happened. For actresses that’s worse, their bodies are analyzed in detail. That’s not right”.
With a undressed man the full frontal effects could be two: the Fassbender effect, or the other.
“I prefer not to talk about this”.
In the film’s world you are new enough to let yourself be surprised. What’s surprise you the most?
“How difficult, immature and self-reported are some actors. It’s unbelievable. Luckily i haven’t met many like them.”
